T.G.I.F.!

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Today is Friday and I could not be happier. I have a very exciting weekend planned with Monkey.

Tomorrow we are going to the EAA museum up in Osh Kosh. We have never been and Monkey loves planes. It was his idea to go of course. He asked me right away on Monday if we could go this weekend so of course we are going. He doesn’t ask all that often to do something that specific.

Sunday will be filled with fun things such as, grocery shopping, laundry, and of course homework. Oh and a meeting for football next year.

Have a great weekend! I am off to FCP II lab where I get to learn/practice wound care. Luckily it will be on a fake man or woman. I don’t think I could handle seeing and smelling a real wound at 9am. Actually, I would be sicked out at any hour of the day.

Icks!!

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I just had to do four online module things about wound care and lemme tell you what, I will not be a wound care specialist. GROSS! That was for real some of the grossest stuff I have ever seen. Of course there was that time when we had a customer trying to show us her guts. Nope, I wish I was kidding. I think Sadie actually had to see some of it. Not pleasant at all.

I think I’m sticking to oncology.

My First Day of Clinical

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Was today. It was really good! I think I am going to enjoy this semester’s clinical time much more than I did last semester. We are actually going to be doing more patient cares and putting the skills we have been learning into practice.

I got to feed a patient today, do an assessment on another patient, and then we prepared for out patient next week. It was an awesome feeling. I felt accomplished today when I left.

Kind of nice to start putting it all together.

After clinical I got to go to my favorite class….adult. Riiiiiiiight, I freakin’ hate the class! The teacher is the biggest joke. I could teach the class better than she is. When we ask her questions, she cannot answer them or she just talks in circles. We have a test on Wednesday and no one in the class has any clue how/what we are supposed to study. Did I mention that she had NO idea that sickle cell is a genetic “mutation” if you will that protects a person from malaria. Yeah, she didn’t know. Every one of us looked around in shock and disbelief. I think I learned that when I was 5. Not really but, DUH!!

Chelsea Clinton

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Is coming to town! I am so excited, she will be at UW-Milwaukee tomorrow. I’m quite sad to say that I will be in a meeting for clinical at the time she will be on campus.

I’m shocked that her visit wasn’t highly publicized at school? Or was it? Hell if I know.

Drugs And Fish Are Making Me Crazy!

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

I have been studying for what feels like forever for my first pharm exam. It is not that hard to understand at this point, I just have to make sure that I understand how X impacts Y for every single freakin’ thing! It is all tied, jumbled, and messed together. It is, however, quite interesting. That said, I should get back to studying.

Side note. My fish is freakin’ insane for sure! If he could get out of his bowl, I think he would murder me in my sleep. Gosh, I don’t even dress the guy up like Rachel does her precious Sunny. Seriously, the past few days when I feed him, he jumps out of his bowl at me. It isn’t like I starve the fish or anything. I mean, I may forget to feed him once in a while but not for days on end. And lately I have noticed a lot of action going on down by his the rocks in the bowl? I don’t really know what he is doing. Maybe he is starving and  scavenging for the 700 flecks of food he lets fall to the bottom every day? I looked over a few minutes ago and he was swimming frantically around his little vase thing. Maybe he’s going to die soon or something? I dunno, but he is freakin’ me out a lottle bit.

2 Hours And Nothing!!

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

I just drove two fucking hours to class, sat down, and someone came in and wrote on the board that the teacher would not be here!! OMFG am I pissed right now. I cannot believe this shit. And she’s the teacher who basically said if you walk in late, forget it. Uhm, she was late last week and didn’t bother coming today.

Sure am glad I risked my life to get her on time just to not have class!! UGH!!

Awake During Surgery

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I am sure a lot of you know this happens but I just learned WHY it happens. You have probably heard that people can be having surgery and be awake, not on purpose either. In fact, they just made a movie about it.  It does not happen often, but it does in fact happen. The reason is, they combine local anesthetic with neuromuscular blocking agents. The neuromuscular blocking agents are what paralyze the muscles (I won’t bore you with  receptor details) in the body and make it easier for surgeons to do their work, however, you can still feel pain, hear, etc. The only thing they do is prevent muscles from being able to contract. So if given inadequate anesthetic, you’re pretty much screwed because you will be physically unable to tell them that you are awake!!

Yes, everyone will get sick and tired of hearing about the stuff I am learning. I just like to share :D

Another Snowday For Me and Monkey!!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Awesome!! We are going to chill and of course I’ll do homework because I have an entire day to do so!! Kind of cool for us :) What sucks, UWM waited until 6 am to cancel classes. I started to drive to school and turned around. I said to myself, they can have my professionalism points, I’m not going to die today.

I got just outside of J-Town and almost went into the ditch due to the drifts on the road and as soon as there were no street lights, I couldn’t see a damned thing!! Honestly, I could see like 5ft in front of me. Best part, a big diesel truck flew past me and I had to almost come to a dead stop before I could see the road again. I turned around as soon as I could!

Milwaukee is having a snow emergency and they waited to call off school? WTF are they thinking? Some of us commute to classes every single day for crying out loud!!

I even tried to call my teacher on her cell and her phone said, “The caller you have just reached is not accepting calls at this time.” Nice. Oh and then it said the same thing in Spanish? Maybe she’s fluent? I’m not sure. Anyway. She probably knew it was canceled and was sleeping tight in her snuggly warm bed! UGH!!

Brachytherapy

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Would be scary and one of the most not fun things I can think of. Brachytherapy is a treatment for various kinds of cancer where a radio active item is placed inside your body near the site of cancer. Some people have to be hospitalized for this treatment and the nurse treating the patients has to take special precautions so that they limit their exposure to radiation. I don’t know about you but that would freak me out. You know, the nurse comes in in a hazmat suit to treat me. Okay, not totally like that, but scary none the less. Scary to think that you are being freely exposed to crazy levels of radiation and healthy people are taking all kinds of precautions to reduce their exposure. In fact, nurses dealing with these patients will wear a film badge that they take to the radiation department after their shift to see how much radiation they were exposed to. Kind of crazy!!

Oh yeah, did I mention I want to specialize in oncology?

Captain Obvious Is My Friend!!

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Okay so today I realized that my teacher for my adult class is a first rate tard. Yup, she sure nuff is. Her lecture includes her reading power point slides to us. I am in college  and can pretty much read at this point. When she deviates from the power point, she sounds like a bumbling idiot! Her speak is just ridonkulous and I cannot follow simple conversation.

Today we talked about cancer and she says, “Infection is the number one cause of death in cancer patients, so we are really concerned with that.” Well holy shit, I never would have thunk that we would be concerned with the number one cause of death in a certain population of patient. Glad she was there to point out the fucking obvious. You know, because I can’t read the power point slide myself and figure that out.

Again, I’m thankful that I pay $4000 a semester to have someone read power point slides to me. Luckily her class is the only one I detest :)
