Uhm, being a nurse?
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008As you all know, I’m a nurse extern right now. Basically, I do all the work a licensed RN does (with a few restrictions for liability reasons and because of our special patient population), but under the supervision of an RN. I don’t want to brag about how I’m doing, but I have been pretty much on my own since the 3rd week or so. Both of my preceptors think I am doing a wonderful job and they trust me to care for my patients, ask for help, and ask questions as necessary (I usually have 2-3 of my own patients).
Well, I just got sent an email and in said email, someone said, “Is this job your doing going to end in fall, go through school, or be permanent?” Uhm? The job I’m doing? WTF? I’m sorry but this is not just some ‘job’ I’m doing, this is my career and of course it is permanent. I am not going to school to get my BSN to see if it’s something I may like doing. Duh! Who would do that?
My externship has been a wonderful learning opportunity for me. I guess it just struck a nerve. I felt as though the comment was condescending. Like this was some silly job taking up my time this summer. Granted, I may not work at the same facility when I graduate, but this ‘job’ I’m doing, being a nurse, it’s a pretty permanent thing. I LOVE my career (even though it is just beginning)!!
