I am on a ROLL this evening!

Monday, March 10th, 2008

I have not been posting daily and then..BLAM 100 posts in one night. Okay, so that was an exaggeration. I had an appointment with some man to come and look at the apartment this evening and guess what, he is late. Guessing he won’t show up. UGH! Glad I waste my time for these fools. I should have guessed by the conversation we had last night

Me: This is Tracy, you called about the apartment in J-town.

Man: On Scuba Lane?

Me: No, on Diver Blvd.

(Long pause)

Man: Oh the ones for $610?

Me: Yup.

(Long pause)

Man: Do you still have one available?

Me: Yes, one lower.

(Long pause)

Man: When is that available?

Okay, sick of writing, but the gist of it was that the man was mentally challenged. I had to tell him what time worked for him because he was just sitting on the phone with me silent. Actually, I was calling you to tell you that you have wasted your time, the ad was fake,  and there really isn’t an apartment for rent. And I offered up a showing on an apartment that is not available. I enjoy messing with people and wasting my time. You know, because I have nothing better to do.

5th grade presentation

Monday, March 10th, 2008

On Friday I have to present some of my knowledge of the human body (laughing at myself right now) to my Monkey’s 5th grade class. I asked the teacher for some direction so I could do some prep, but that didn’t really happen. I guess I’m on my own to come up with some interesting stuff to share.

Any ideas? What do you think 5th graders would like to hear about in relation to the human body. More specifically, bones, muscles, and the circulatory system?

Next is acute care

Monday, March 10th, 2008

On a happy note. I am finished with my long term care clinical and will start in acute care three weeks from today. We will be at a nice facility and hopefully have nice nurses showing us the ropes. Of course, I heard for the first time last semester that nurses eat their young. EEEKK! I hope that is not what I encounter in my clinical experience. I do have a great instructor though, so that makes it a pretty awesome experience.

I almost forgot, I got to help dress a wound today. It was a nasty bugger. I was sort of happy that I did not have to take the old dressing, etc off and clean it, but I was all good wrapping that bad boy up and assisting with the cleaning process. My other classmate got the privilege of cleaning the wound. Pretty sweet I tell ya. Our instructor seizes every opportunity for us which is more than I can say for a lot of other instructors!

Labor and delivery is not always a happy time

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Today we had a speaker come and talk about women who have experienced the loss of a child. Not all of these mothers got to bond with their children because they passed before they were delivered and some had a short time to bond before their babies passed. Not an easy topic to sit and talk about. Very sad, and quite a few of us were crying.

The content was amazing and really brought a lot of things into perspective for several of us students. Each and every day I realize more and more what kind of responsibility I have to my patients. Sometimes I’m scared and other times I could not be any happier. Being a nurse is a huge responsibility and a lot of times we make the experience what it is for a patient.

A patient’s perception of care is everything! I never want to be the nurse that made someone’s stay miserable or less than wonderful. As nurses, we are the patient’s advocate.
