Awake During Surgery
February 6th, 2008 by TracyI am sure a lot of you know this happens but I just learned WHY it happens. You have probably heard that people can be having surgery and be awake, not on purpose either. In fact, they just made a movie about it. It does not happen often, but it does in fact happen. The reason is, they combine local anesthetic with neuromuscular blocking agents. The neuromuscular blocking agents are what paralyze the muscles (I won’t bore you with receptor details) in the body and make it easier for surgeons to do their work, however, you can still feel pain, hear, etc. The only thing they do is prevent muscles from being able to contract. So if given inadequate anesthetic, you’re pretty much screwed because you will be physically unable to tell them that you are awake!!
Yes, everyone will get sick and tired of hearing about the stuff I am learning. I just like to share ![]()
